Newsletter: January 2007

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc.

Happy, Happy New Year!!

My newsletter did not get written before Christmas due to family commitments which became rather intense. However, I hope you had a very happy and joyful time.

May the New Year bring you many wonderful surprises, happy adventures and off course to top it all off, excellent health and lots of gardening pleasures.

We have all been experiencing the dry weather and the effects it has on our gardens. Aren’t we lucky that the irises are hardy and can cope with less water?

Happy Birthday to Gwen Alexandrou for the 12th January.

                                                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the hot dry climate we have been experiencing lately, except today when we had very welcome rains (19th Jan.), we may consider trying to grow some aril bred iris as they love the hot arid seasons. These delicate blooms have very pretty intricate veining and remind me of fine porcelain china.

Our member, Pat Toolan, President of Aril Society International has agreed to write an article about the importance of bees in the hybridising procedure of the Aril Iris. So I will keep you posted on the life of the Aril.

Floral Design for February – Interpretive

                                                                In the Heat of Summer

I don’t think we should have too much trouble working out a design after the hot dry summer we have experienced.
