Newsletter: August 2005 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc.
Editorial Hello everyone, I am back writing the newsletter in Sandra’s absence while she is on holiday in Alice Springs enjoying the warmer weather in the north.
In my garden With the rain and the sometimes warmer weather the weeds have grown vigorously to try and over run the super early irises now flowering in my garden. At the time of writing I have about 60 different seedlings in bloom and amazingly, still standing after two nights of gale force winds and heavy rain. Although my early seedlings lack the heavy substance now so popular with judges they withstand the elements surprisingly well and are in a wide variety of colours so back to the pollinating for another season to see what else they can produce.
The imminent convention The 2005 committee have been working very hard visiting other garden and floral art clubs to advertise the show and tours. While there are still some places on some of the bus tours there is still plenty of space at the forums with some very interesting speakers to rekindle interest in various species of iris. The welcome dinner on Tuesday evening and the farewell dinner the following Monday still have some vacancies as does the dinner and twilight walk at Warrawong on Sunday evening. Contact Gwen Alexandrou on 8278 1230 if you are interested in registering for any of the events. Julia Jacobs and Rosemary Turner have been working very hard on creating individual items for the fashion parade and auction at the show night dinner, producing some stunning iris features for decorating the home or wearing. Most of these items will be on view at the show on Saturday and the more expensive items will have reserve prices to cover the cost of their creation so come to the show dinner and bid on these exquisite iris works of art. Bookings are essential for the show dinner and all other tours, dinners and forums. Show posters At the September meeting there will be a supply of colourful posters advertising the show. If you know of any nurseries in your area which would be willing to display a poster please take some to distribute. Other places to display the posters are community notice boards, tourist information centres and florist shops so please help your committee members to distribute them. The more posters out in public view the better.
Jobs for the garden in September Weeding, fertilizing and more weeding to produce lots of lovely iris for the show! Don’t forget to put out the snail bait (preferably the pet friendly variety) to keep the flower munchers at bay. Start preparing the beds for the new varieties you will purchase at the show and from the specialist iris nurseries who will be sending out their new catalogues very soon. It’s also a good time to plant the summer vegetables and annual summer flowers to fill your gardens with colour after the iris finish. Dahlias can be divided and planted out now for the autumn display to complement the reblooming irises. And that’s the lot from Marg Kuchel - See you all at the show.
