Newsletter: June 2005 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc.
Editorial Finally, we are all able to report that our gardens have had the benefit of a good soaking rain. It doesn’t take long for all the weeds to pop up as well. I’m sure everyone will be doing their best to keep their Iris rhizomes weed free. Our very knowledgeable, Colleen Modra, shared some tips on fertilising our T.B Iris at the last meeting. Late July is a good time to apply a slow release fertiliser, followed in late August by either a dose of Seasol, or an application of phostrogen towards flowering time. It is always great to share tips on gardening in relation to growing Iris, especially when we can hear from the experts. Sometimes, with all the matters under discussion, we can forget that this is what the club is all about. Sharing our knowledge and pleasure in growing Iris, just for the enjoyment factor of seeing our Iris do so well in our own gardens. It is always refreshing to get back to basics for those who are not seasoned and experienced Iris growers. 2005 Convention & Show Committee Report Julia Jacobs presented the following report at our June meeting as follows: Signs and advertising were discussed at length including the placement of signs at The Shores and prominent places leading into Adelaide. Councils permission is being sought from different suburbs, and others have offered to place signs for us. Does anyone have a sign writer in the family to help the club reduce expenses for the signs? Our original signs are to be changed in relation to date, venue for this year. Thankyou to Sue Stribley and Jenny Kempe for making the flyers possible. We need to distribute them far and wide to advertise the show and convention. New flyers will shortly be available, covering the show. Some people are replying late with registrations for the convention, making it difficult to confirm numbers for the bus trips as we have to pay the deposits. $500 has been refunded to us from the Adelaide International Hotel. The Quilters Guild of S.A are going to display their quilts at the show. They have their own insurance cover. They will be displaying quilts predominently featuring Iris. Everything is mapped out for the show and is now pending final numbers of craft stalls, displays, commercial, club and commission stalls. A large area is to be set aside to display all competition entries. We need all members to support the speaker forums on the nights, the bus tours and the show. This is something we have all been working on for over 2 years and we really want our members to be a big part of it all and come and help and enjoy the Iris to the full extent. It is a chance to meet other Iris lovers, take in all the beauty and some humour while working together to make it a big success. This is our chance to promote our club to each other, to the public and to attract new members to become an active part of the club. For all those members, who for many reasons cannot attend meetings, we are asking you if you would kindly like to donate money towards materials being purchased for making items to be auctioned. Some members have already spent a great deal of money donating items besides doing so much work. It is time for us all to pull together so that we can all work towards covering the cost we will incur over the whole convention. We have a wonderful program for the whole convention and it is a wonderful opportunity not to be missed. Admittance to the show will be $5:00 for all this year and this is a very reasonable rate considering what we have to offer at the show. Julia Jacobs
