Newsletter: May 2005 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc. Editorial Given that the month of May for this year has been one of the driest on record our guest speakers talk for April was most appropriate. Jan Beare gave a talk on drought proofing your garden. The key components being; correct choice of plants, mulching, appropriate watering methods and the right selection of fertilisers. A very interesting talk and I’m sure members came away with some added tips on how to help gardens cope better in these very “drying” times !. For the month of May, in lieu of a guest speaker Julia Jacobs will be showing a video entitled “Fashion, Fetish & Fantasy”. This is a comprehensive video displaying garments incorporating fresh flowers as part of their design. Hopefully, members will be able to obtain some ideas for outfits for our fashion parade to be held at the Saturday night dinner of our Convention. This will be a chance to show how creative we can be. 2005 Convention Committee Report Registrations are beginning to come in as are replies from stall holders and club displays. We now have the schedule for guest speakers at the convention Tuesday 25th October Welcome Dinner No speaker Wednesday 26th October Pam Hilton Dutch Iris Pat Toolan Arils Thursday 27th October Colleen Modra Spurias Judy Kiesling (U.S.A) Hybridising Friday 28th October Peter Jackson Louisianas Heather Prior Friendship Garden Saturday 29th October Fashion Parade, Auction Speaker Rita Gormley Medians
Sunday 30th October Dinner & Night walk at Monday 31st October Farewell dinner No speaker We are looking forward to hearing our guest speakers and hope as many members as possible can attend and benefit from all their knowledge. The official opening is at 2:00pm on Saturday, by Jane Lomax-Smith followed by a demonstration on floral arranging by David Ruston who is a great entertainer. A lovely group of Ikebana ladies (Japanese Floral design) are decorating the foyer of The Shores and the window recess areas down the passage. We are very grateful to them as we are to David Ruston who will decorate the stage, with help from members of the club. He is bringing Spurias and has asked for beardeds and foliage etc to be supplied by members. We will also be supplying the Ikebana ladies with Iris and foliage on the Friday. We will need further Iris and foliage to decorate table centres for the various dinners and for a presentation sheath for Jane Lomax-Smith. We will require every possible bloom, from you, the members, to pull this off without the expense of having to buy in flowers and foliage. Perhaps those members who don’t attend all the meetings will be able to come and enjoy the convention with us and help along the way, especially for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the show. We will be setting up trestles from 8:00am on Friday morning, to be ready for craft people and entries. We will close at 6:00pm sharp Friday night in readiness for people to attend the guest speaker at the Lakes Resort. We have arranged the dates of October 1st & 2nd for the 2005 committee to visit all gardens on the bus tours and make sure they comply with the insurance and our stipulations. A letter will be forwarded to them concerning this. There have been positive changes to the show schedule of both cuts and floral design. These will give the competitiors more opportunities to win prizes and will also be more appealing to the public, as entries will be arranged in colour groupings. Entering times have all been changed and must be strictly adhered to. A copy of the schedule and these changes will be provided to all members very shortly.
