Newsletter: March 2004 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc. Editorial The fine autumn weather is here and it’s lovely for gardening. Now is the time to do your final shift around for next season’s iris blooms. When you dig your irises please keep in mind the plants the society needs for planting in Hahndorf and the City of Adelaide. Information is in these minutes. Australia Day awards On Australia Day one of our founding members and our newest member were both honored with awards for service to the community. Harold Lane received the South Australian Citizen of the Year award for his service to the people of Balaklava and district and the Medical profession in SA. Gary Roberts from Victor Harbor received the Victor Harbor Citizen of the Year award for his service to the Historical Society, Camera Club, Heritage Committee, Encounter Bay Football Club and Back Valley Table tennis club. Congratulations from all members. Memberships are now due. Membership fees must be paid by the May meeting or your membership will lapse and you will not receive any newsletters. June 10th Neil and Pauline Smith - Impressions of Japan venue to be advised July 8th Attracting butterflies to your garden to be confirmed August 12th Speaker from the Camellia Society to be confirmed September 9th John and Rosemary Turner NT and Qld trip October 9th/10th Judging/Show presentation school (one day garden, one day show bench) with Helen Reid President of Australian Iris Society venues to be advised. October 14th Julia Jacobs, Peter Jackson, Ivar Schmidt Tips on staging iris and floral art for the show October 23rd,24th,25th Set up and annual show November 11th Colleen Modra Report on USA Convention, presentation of show awards. December 9th Season end celebration dinner and fashion show. No formal meeting.
February Speaker Denis May gave a very interesting talk on the history and future of the Botanic Gardens in Adelaide, Wittunga and Mount Lofty. The management of the gardens is interested in forming working relationships with floral societies and is currently undertaking a review to see what should be planted and where. There is a possibility that Iris could be incorporated in one of the gardens with help maintaining the bed from the Iris Society.
