Newsletter: February 2004 SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc. Congratulations Pat Toolan. Pat has been elected President of the International Aril society, the first woman and the first president from outside USA. Presidents Report: This past year as president has been a relatively easy one for me as most of the programming had been done from the previous year. Again we have enjoyed hearing and seeing slides from a range of interesting speakers ranging from herbs to open gardens and the Botanic Gardens. Even one of younger members Brett gave a great talk on the gardens in Italy, Holland and England as well as Iris judging. We are familiar with the Broadway phrase, "The Show Must Go On", and so it did. Considering that many of our members went to the Convention in Perth, resulting in fewer people being able to help or exhibit in our own annual show, a good show was still held. As is always the case, at that time of the year, we have to compete with many other events held in Adelaide e.g. The Home Show. It therefore is imperative we keep a good standard to encourage and entice the public as well try to encourage more exhibitors. A fine balance. I would like to thank the committee for the work they did in organising and running the show. I would also like to thank Julia for holding the reins on the occasions when I was interstate. I would also like to thank Betty, for her work as secretary and Margaret, for her work as treasurer and the other committee members for the work they have done throughout the year. Most importantly though it is a great privilege to officially endorse the Society's congratulations to Peter for winning the 2002 Merton Calvert Award for his Louisiana release "Snap Frozen". What Peter has done is shown that persistence for excellence pays off. We wish him every success in the future. I would like to conclude by wishing the Society all the best for the forthcoming year. Due to increased work commitments Carol and I will not be able to be involved in the Society this year. Ivar Schmidt 2003 President Election of Officers for 2004:
