Newsletter: October 2003SOUTH AUSTRALIAN IRIS SOCIETY Inc. EDITORIAL The 2003 show was successful despite the absence of some of our exhibitors who were holidaying in the west and others who had other commitments. Missing from the show benches were Peter Jackson's Louisianas, Ann Head's seedlings and floral art from Pam Jackson, Natalie Houba and John Turner. With the season being very late this year exhibitors were limited with what was blooming so entries of cuts and floral art were much lower than usual. Even with the above absences the show benches had a reasonable display of colourful blooms and the standard of the floral art was very good. Julia Jacobs again staged a lovely display of blue irises for "The year of pure water" and her arrangements of iris and roses in the foyer were stunning. Special thanks must go to Ann Pillay who organised the art display in the foyer. This added another dimension to the show and was very well received. Beryl Roberts again had a stand of her water colours of iris and other flowers and a beautiful range of cards and stationery for sale. The three commercial growers all had very colourful stands which added greatly to the show and all should be congratulated on their efforts. The Grand Champion cut caused some controversy when a perfect bloom of 'Blue Magic', a DUTCH iris, was awarded the sash. The bloom was perfect in every way and still looked fresh and perfect when the show was finished, unlike the reserve champion TB 'Quito', and many others. Thanks must also go to the businesses that sponsored the show by donating vouchers to be used as trophies and for the raffle. These are all recognised on the 2003 Champion awards list and members are encouraged to patronize these businesses in return. As usual with the show, the hard work was done by just a few members. We thank these people and ask that more volunteers give some time next year to share the load more equitably. We do not need to wear out the current hard workers too soon by over working them. Late news and apology. A full financial statement is not available at time of printing as the bank statement has not yet been collected from Strathalbyn post office. Full details will be included in the next newsletter. At this stage it appears that the club has made a profit of over $2800 from the show.
