Guest Speaker -
Merilyn Kuchel gave an interesting talk and slide
presentation on the Open Garden Scheme in South
Australia.
Garden owners who open their gardens through the Open
Gardens scheme are able to keep 35% of the proceeds if
they wish. 85% of them donate their takings to charity.
The surplus entry fees are given to community gardens as
part of a grants program. Gardens receiving grants last
year were a group from Gilles Plains, Maryattville High
School for a fern grotto, Mt Barker Duck Flat hospital
staff and the Whyalla Centre Care garden. $55,000 has
been donated to SA Charities.
Crystal Brook Community Garden used their grant several
years ago and a bequest, to create a beautiful garden in
front of the hospital, which is open to all and is
greatly appreciated by all who use it.
The purpose of the Open Garden Scheme is to promote
Knowledge and Pleasure of gardening. Tammy Fraser is the
National President.
Merilyn showed slides of many of SAs gardens
covering a vast range of different types and sizes of
gardens. Every type from cottage to Mediterranean, dry
land, courtyard to large country garden, permaculture,
cool climate, native and others are open at various times
during the year.
The book on the Open Gardens of Australia is now
available in paperback.
Merilyn has offered to return and tell us about the Open
Gardens of Tasmania illustrated with more of her slides.

Portrush Road road works. Please note that when the
roadworks are completed there will be no right turn from
Portrush Road into Mathilda St as there will be a
continuous island. Entry from the west will be from Union
St off The Parade.
Entry fee for meetings - it was pleasing to note that all
but one of the people who signed the attendance sheet at
the April meeting put $1 in the honour box. Thank you
all.
Newsletters and receipts will be on the table at the door
for members to collect. Please look for your name at the
top of the page.
Missing Library Book - The Gardeners Iris Book by
William Shear was purchased for the library last year. It
has not been catalogued and has not been returned. Could
whoever has the book return it as there are probably a
lot of other members who would like to borrow it.
Cultural hint - If you would like to exhibit Dutch Iris
at the show it is suggested that you refrigerate the
bulbs for a few weeks and plant them in the garden eight
weeks prior to the show for blooms at the right time.
Good luck!
